A Family That Defies What Is Normal

Image
A Family That Defies What is Normal Little Miss Sunshine is a film released in 2006 that tells the story of a family traveling to California for a beauty pageant. Although this movie appears to center around the beauty pageant, the main focus is actually of the family members and how they learn and grow throughout the film. The Hoover family is definitely not an ordinary family - each member has specific interests and issues that they deal with. The family consists of Richard (a struggling motivational speaker), Sheryl (Richard's wife, who is losing her patience with her husband and feels overworked), Dwayne (Richard and Sheryl's son, who has taken a vow of silence until he has fulfilled his goal of being a fighter pilot), Olive (Richard and Sheryl's daughter, who is the one participating in the beauty pageant), Frank (Sheryl's brother who is temporarily living with the family after attempted suicide), and Edwin (Richard's father, who has a heroin addiction).   ...

What I've Learned This Year

Image
What I've Learned This Year Throughout the year, I have learned many new things while in SUPA Writing 105. With each new thing I have learned, it has helped me to grow as a writer, and for that I am grateful that I had the opportunity to take this class!  Analyzing The ability to properly analyze a piece of writing, video, etc can be quite tricky. Oftentimes, most people will default into summarizing what they watched or read, rather than adding their own commentary. It’s easy to just relay the information you just saw, but that just ends up being boring for the reader. I have also been a victim of this. Properly analyzing something has been difficult for me in the past, and because of that I had made it a goal for myself to work on it. Throughout the year, I have been assigned a handful of writing pieces- all of which requiring to go beyond summarizing what is already there. This resulted in me pushing myself to fully analyze what I planned on writing. Now, I would say that...

Sexism, Gender, & Normalcy

Image
Sexism, Gender, & Normalcy Author Ariel Levy tackles the controversial issue surrounding Semenya Caster, in “ Either/Or: Sports, Sex and the Case of Caster Semenya” . Once South African Olympic runner , Caster, had begun to gain success, rumors had circulated that she was actually a boy, with these rumors greatly affecting her life. This piece goes deeper than just this controversial issue, as Levy elaborates on the issues of sexism in sports, the concept of gender and normalcy.  Ariel Levy addresses the issue of sexism in sports in this piece. Firstly, throughout this piece, Levy explains the opinions of many people that believe that Caster has an unfair advantage, as an olympic runner, with the increased level of testosterone. Levy counters that by bringing up highly regarded athlete, Micheal Phelps, who “has unusually long arms and is said to have double-jointed elbows, knees, and ankles” (page 125). No one ever critiques these extreme advantages. On the other hand, a...

Getting Together an Essay

Proposal    Introduction : There are very high standards placed upon women in our society. They cannot falter - they must stay in their place. They must uphold the classic gender standards that have been repeated over and over again in our society. Not to mention, that oftentimes these standards can be contradictions of each other. Although, throughout time, the possibilities and opportunities for women have increased, there are still many barriers that exist for women. These are difficult, pointless, and harmful standards, yet they continue to be instilled. In result, when women cannot meet these standards, they are left with constant judgements and comments towards them. It’s almost as if women cannot win in our society.  Artifact : The video “ 48 Things Women Hear (That Men Just Don’t) ” was uploaded by Huffington Post in 2015. It features 48 women of varying ages saying a simple sentence that they have been told before. Though they are simple sentences, they have a hu...

A Reflection of my Work

Image
Growth I remember that at the beginning of the year that there were two things that I struggled with when it came to writing. One being the ability to properly express the countless thoughts and ideas I have for a writing piece, and the other moving from summarizing to analyzing. However, by this point of the year, I believe that I have been able to improve on those issues. When creating a writing piece, I usually have many ideas and thoughts about the specific topic. The problem is that sometimes these ideas may get forgotten or I struggle to express those ideas in writing. This can often be frustrating. When I decided on my artifact for the unit 2 essay, I knew that it was going to be a challenge. The artifact I chose was a video that featured 48 different statements from women, each of the statements featuring a different type of issue. This video left me with many different thoughts. There were so many ideas I could include and directions to take in my essay. This was a bit o...

The Unrealistic Standards Women Face

The Unrealistic Standards Women Face There are very high standards placed upon women in our society. These relentless chastisements against women are highlighted in a video that is just under two minutes long. In 2015, Huffington Post uploaded a Youtube video titled, “ 48 Things Women Hear in a Lifetime (That Men Just Don’t) ”. This video featu...

Raising the Minimum Wage

Image
Raising the Minimum Wage Once President Joe Biden took office at the beginning of the year, he had made plans for a Covid Relief Bill. In the bill, he proposed that there be an increase in the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour. This sparked arguments between people in Congress, and left many divided on the issue. Those for the increase argued that it is incredibly difficult for even a single person to live on minimum wage and it becomes even more difficult with families. Those against the increase argued that small businesses would struggle to pay their workers, and as a result many people would be left unemployed. Ultimately, the minimum wage increase ended up being denied from the bill. Despite being denied from the bill, this issue continues to cause much debate, and people have been starting to become restless over this. All around the country, employees are demanding that they receive higher wages. Some businesses have supported the employees’ wishes, but there are still...
