A Reflection of my Work

I remember that at the beginning of the year that there were two things that I struggled with when it came to writing. One being the ability to properly express the countless thoughts and ideas I have for a writing piece, and the other moving from summarizing to analyzing. However, by this point of the year, I believe that I have been able to improve on those issues.

When creating a writing piece, I usually have many ideas and thoughts about the specific topic. The problem is that sometimes these ideas may get forgotten or I struggle to express those ideas in writing. This
can often be frustrating. When I decided on my artifact for the unit 2 essay, I knew that it was going to be a challenge. The artifact I chose was a video that featured 48 different statements from women, each of the statements featuring a different type of issue. This video left me with many different thoughts. There were so many ideas I could include and directions to take in my essay. This was a bit overwhelming. I started by simply writing down each of the statements, but that wasn’t enough to completely figure out what I wanted to do. Then, we were assigned to write a “zero draft”. I found that the idea of this was extremely beneficial. It gave me a chance to write down everything I had been thinking, without having to worry if everything was pieced together. I just wrote every thought that popped into my head, without overthinking if the sentence  or idea made sense. I think this is a method that I should continue to use when I have to write essays, instead of having the thoughts just stay in my head until I write about it. 

The other issue that I struggled with was the difference between summarizing and analyzing. It is much easier to just write what you observed when reading or watching something. However, that doesn’t allow for much substance and is quite boring for someone else to read. When writing the essay I forced
myself to write reasons for why each of the quotes used were relevant and their meaning. I also tried to connect each of the quotes together for more cohesiveness. I think that the final product of my essay had just enough summarizing, but was mainly analyzing my artifact. I think that many of the questions and assignments assigned this year forced me to gain a deeper understanding of the topic and to fully analyze it as well. This allowed me to be fully prepared to analyze my artifact in the unit 2 essay.

  What I've Learned This Year Throughout the year, I have learned many new things while in SUPA Writing 105. With each new thing I have learned, it has helped me to grow as a writer, and for that I am grateful that I had the opportunity to take this class!  Analyzing The ability to properly analyze a piece of writing, video, etc can be quite tricky. Oftentimes, most people will default into summarizing what they watched or read, rather than adding their own commentary. It’s easy to just relay the information you just saw, but that just ends up being boring for the reader. I have also been a victim of this. Properly analyzing something has been difficult for me in the past, and because of that I had made it a goal for myself to work on it. Toxic Masculinity

 Toxic Masculinity  Since a young age, men are told to act a specific way in our society. They are supposed to appear overly masculine and strong, and to not present any type of emotion. These expectations cause a great deal of harm. As men continue to uphold these standards, they unleash violence.  The documentary, "Tough Guise 2" does an amazing job in bringing to light the problems surrounding toxic masculinity. In our society, men are constantly told to hide their emotions and ac t tough, and that acting "feminine" or "soft" is a bad thing. From a very young age, these values are instilled into men. For example, the documentary explains that the biceps of G.I. Joe dolls have greatly increased, along with the size of superheroes. Along with that, advertisements, video games, sports, etc, show off the overly masculine stereotype and display an overabundance of violence. Proposal    Introduction : There are very high standards placed upon women in our society. They cannot falter - they must stay in their place. They must uphold the classic gender standards that have been repeated over and over again in our society. Not to mention, that oftentimes these standards can be contradictions of each other. Although, throughout time, the possibilities and opportunities for women have increased, there are still many barriers that exist for women. These are difficult, pointless, and harmful standards, yet they continue to be instilled. In result, when women cannot meet these standards, they are left with constant judgements and comments towards them.
